Should You Start Your Mortgage Broking Course Now or Wait for the New Qualification?

If you’re thinking about completing a mortgage broking course, you’ve probably heard that changes are being made to the finance and mortgage broking qualifications.

So, should you enrol now, or is it better to wait?

The short answer is that while updates to the nationally recognised qualifications are currently being developed, the final training products have not yet been endorsed or released.

Here’s what we know today.

What’s changing?

The Future Skills Organisation is currently reviewing and updating finance and mortgage broking courses including;

The review aims to ensure the qualifications continue to reflect current industry practice, regulation and the skills expected by employers. Public consultation is scheduled as part of the development process before the final qualifications are considered for endorsement.

Should you wait?

This is one of the most common questions we receive.

The honest answer is:

No one yet knows exactly what the final qualifications will look like.

Until the review is complete and the updated qualifications are endorsed, no training provider can say exactly what the final outcome will be.

Why many students choose to enrol now

Many students prefer to start their studies now because:

  • They can begin working towards their career sooner.
  • They don’t delay entering the industry.
  • Current nationally recognised qualifications remain valid unless and until they are superseded in accordance with the national training system.

What has happened historically?

When training packages are updated, qualifications are reviewed to ensure they reflect current industry requirements.

Sometimes the changes are relatively minor.

Other times there may be changes to:

  • Units of competency
  • Qualification structure
  • Elective options
  • Industry expectations

The exact changes depend on the outcomes of consultation and the endorsement process.

Our advice

If you’re ready to begin a career in mortgage broking, waiting for changes that have not yet been finalised may simply delay your career.

The current qualifications remain nationally recognised, and the updated versions are still progressing through consultation and development.
